it sounds like you had too much ammonia producing elements - could be overstocking, over feeding or not enough live rock.

in my system i have 7 small/medium fish 50 red leg hermits, 40 turbo snails, various hard corals and 3 anenomies.
filtration wise i have 100kg live rock, deltec AP600 skimmer, 4 tunze pumps, 300mg/hr ozone generator and a 4x1x2 sump tank with 6" sand bed.
all looked after by a full aquatronica computer system.
i do a 10% water change every month with RO/DI water from my own filter.

my phosphate/nitrate readings are as good as nil everytime i test.
Computer system sounds good they were far out of my pocket when I kept a tank though. Tank size was 10ft x 2.5 x 2ft with a couple of large tufa rocks in. 2 royal gammas, 3 yellow tangs, 2 blue tangs, anenomes, cleaner shrimps, pair of goby's and 6 clowns until I put in a fire clown and it killed all the nemo's

Many a time I have thought about starting again but have decided just to try and see as many as I can when I dive, cheaper option I would love to see some pics of yours if thats possible?

theres ya problem! - in a 10ft system i would be looking at 200-250kg of live rock - minimum.

i'll have a root around and see if i can find the pics i took as i built my system.

Nitrate and nitrite are effectively the same thing, except that nitrites tend to be more toxic than than nitrates; if your O2 concentration starts to fall, especially in a biological filter, the aerobes will stay alive by stripping an oxygen off the nitrate (NO3) ion, turning it into nitrite (NO2). When conditions are properly aerobic, the opposite is true.

You can remove the nitrate/nitrate completely by having an anaerobic stage, when it gets completely broken down, liberating nitrogen, but I don't know how practical that is in an aquarium or if it's done in practice - oops, looks like someone's already worked that one out.

Nice looking tank!

I've got a 6x2x2 marine set up, the system is still very young, so have only just started to stock it. Saying that I've a pair of Percs, 5 chromis, flame angel, yellow tang, cleaner wrasse, pair of cardinals and a rareish anthias... some turbo snails, cleaner shrimp and a couple of blood shrimp.

Doubt if I'll be adding too much more, although I,ve got my eye on a couple more anthias. Got a few softies in there too.

The tank has about 100kg of Live Rock, some of which is in the sump, I'll probably add a few more kg over the next few months...

I think it's a great hobby, but you have to have deep pockets.... combine it with diving, and you are forever skint!

I didn't feel a thing

Nice tank BTW. Oh and I also had a UV filter, in fact I still have it in the shed. I have read they are good if you're lucky enough to live in an area where you can collect sea water from the errrm sea, store in a dark room, no filters for a week. Syphon off the water leaving the dead organisms that have sunk to the bottom then filter through UV to kill (allegedly) any surviving nasties. Never bothered though as I live next to the Irish Sea.
