| An apostrophe is used to show a missing letter or belonging. However apostrophes are not used to indicate plurals. For example: If we are describing a diving scene we might say "There are many DSMBs on the surface of the water" as there are a lot of delayed surface marker buoys on the surface. In this case it would be wrong to say "There are many DSMB's on the surface of the water". If we are describing a particular DSMB and its colour we might say "the DSMB's colour ran and now it is clear". This is correct usage of the apostrophe as the colour belongs to the DSMB. In this case it is wrong to say "the DSMBs colour ran and now it is clear". The exception to this rule is "its". An apostrophe is only used when we are shortening "it is" and never when we are talking about something that belongs to it. HTH |
