Tesco involved in sale of live turtles in China - for food

Tesco ... every little frog helps | Business | The Guardian

I have just got a tortoise (bred in UK) for my birthday and whilst researching information on care of my new pet, I came across this on the Turtle Trust Website about Tesco in China being involved in the sale of live turtles.

Turtles are creatures I have always wanted to see whilst on a dive and so far have not been lucky enough. It looks as if Tesco's chinese outlets have their way there will be none left. This sort of cruelty has to be on par with sharks fins being ripped off sharks.

I hope that my fellow divers will all join in condemning this practice.

Yours swimmingly.

Not a good practice I agree. What also struck me when reading the article was this they "get about 2.3m customers a week, but each spends less than £1 a visit."! I wish my food shopping for this week had cost me less than a pound!

What doubles standards!!
You buy a tortoise for a pet and keep it in an environment that it is not suppose to be kept in but think something is wrong that people from a different country and culture choose to eat soft back turtles!
I suppose everything you eat is organic and reared free range? If not just take a look at your local farm or abbotoire and see how the animals are kept and reared and killed for us to eat.

Well, Yazzyfooty at least my tortoise will not be decapitated just to provide a meal. Nor will it have its shell removed and be disembowelled alive.

anyway how do you know I'm not vegetarian.

I don't think fresh water soft shelled turtles are endangered and before we all get uppity, the Chinese eat cats and dogs and leave babies to die in gutters. So in the great scheme of things, eating turtles ain't that bad really.

To balance it out, pet tortoises kept in captivity / bred in captivity - I have no problem with that. It keeps the species going. Am I sitting on the fence here? Probably.

I like a nice debate though. I also like pet tortoises!

Oh do stop being so emotive! Of course western society doesnt eat tortoises or turtles because we DONT HAVE TO we can eat all sorts of other animals that are sometimes killed in horrendous ways and are also reared in horrendous conditions.

No your tortoise wont be eaten or shelled alive or disemboweled but how natural is it for a tortoise to be kept as a pet? Even if it is reared/bred in captivity why should it remain captive?
While people continue to buy these creatures to satisfy their own trifling yearnings but who ease their conscience by saying they are "specially captive bred" then people will continue to hunt them to make money from them.

And if your a vegetarian I am sure all the veg you eat is organically grown and not force grown on soil thats pumped full of pesticides and other chemicals.

We are not perfect so are in no position to slag off another country because they do it differently to us.
