70s music question.
Just a long shot; I am hoping someone may be able to suggest some names for a band from (mainly) the 70s. I am trying desperately to remember the name and have so little information that I haven't even bothered searching on the internet.

1. They were/are a rock band.
2. The vocalist had a VERY distinctive sharp/gravelly voice - instantly recognizable.
3. It is not Nazereth or Super Tramp. Nor is it Joe Cocker.

This band were not a chart band but may have had one record that flirted with the charts.

Trying to remember has been driving me mad for over a week.
