| Hmm should I include a covering letter I was applying for a new job, very sadly, simply because it brings me closer to the coast and facilitates diving! putting in a speculative one which they are keen on, although it says you only need to send your CV in, I filled in their standard application form as well. Now usually I always send a covering letter but in this case, I really cant be err bothered anymore and I think the application form + CV pretty much covers alot. so for those HR people, does that make sense or is that still a no-no? whilst we are on the topic, I also applied for some foreign jobs since i was looking for a change in scenery and their HR are absolutely atrocious! I asked some simply Qs, and never got a straight answer. in fact they never actually answered any of my Qs. and their online system was designed by an idiot. this from a top ten FTSE100 company! hmmm that was a rant me thinks. opps. anyway so covering letter yes or no? Is it better to have a poor covering letter than no covering letter at all? I really dont think my brain is up for being creative and composing a good one so will recycle some generic crap from older ones..... P.S I hope nobody on YD works for the recruitment side of the company i am apply to based on my lack of motivation! |

| CV's should be no more than 2 pages - any more they get boring and binned. Application forms give the basic information ina format that shows the company you meet their requirements. A covering letter gives you the opportunity to elaborate and tell them why you are the ideal candidate and to give more "personality" to the application. Enlarge on your experiences (!) and generally sell yourself in the letter. Always write a covering letter IMO. |

So - you need to make your application tell them why they should interview you. A covering letter is a good way of doing this. A CV and application form probably isn't enough....
