Well, to avoid the obvious and not knowing the room's location (ie open a window - unless you are on the fifth floor) etc I would call in the RSPCA or any similar animal rescue place.

If you leave an escape route available and force it round slowly towards the exit, will it not go?

Sounds like not your cat is just as terrified and trapped as you are.

I like the sardine tin idea - and whilst not your cat is merrily stuffing its face and deciding to become your friend, then you can open the back door so it can make its exit in a calm manner.

However, don't forget, once having fed not your cat with a tin of sardines, its bound to come back for more....
