I've got to point out the error here. Ice is less dense than water (this is why it floats) and therefore it contracts as it melts. an interesting point is that Water is only one of 2 substances that I know of that do this. Archimedes principle states that a body in water will displace its own weight in water, but of course that only applies if it floats. While the bolts are in the boat they float, their weight is transfered to the boat which displaces that weight in the water. If, for example, the bolts weigh 1kg they will displace 1 litre of water. But the bolts are made of a material which is denser than water, and so they sink. When fully immersed in the water they can only displace an amount of water equal to their own volume. If they weigh 1kg, but are denser than water, they will have a volume of less than 1 litre. It is the act of putting the bolts in a boat that allows their full weight to act to displace the water. Their volume is taken out of the equation. Tip them out of the boat and less water is displaced, hence lower water level.

| Imported post Ok then - not a riddle as such but some lateral thinking is required: A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator to go down to the ground floor to go to work or to go shopping. When he returns he takes the elevator to the seventh floor and walks up the stairs to reach his apartment on the tenth floor. He hates walking so why does he do it?

| OK, a difficult one this and not as obvious as you might at first think. A train leaves Glasgow at 11.17 hrs, and travels at a steady 95 miles per hour heading for its destination at Carlisle. Its gross 'un-passengered' weight is 20,000 kgs and it is carrying 250 passengers - each weighing in at an average of 10 stone. The train makes three scheduled stops en route to its destination and takes on cargo of another 2,000 kgs. It then has to make a forced stop due to 'the wrong type of cow on the track' between stations. It then begins to rain, meaning that the train has to slow down to 50 mph. So, the questions are: Q1) What colour is the train? Q2) What are the percentage odds of the train making its first stop before Glasga Neds nick all its wheels? Q3) What day did the train leave the station? Q4) How long did the man in seat 15E take to complete the Times Crossword?

| Imported post Ok then, a harder one: A woman had two sons who were born on the same hour of the same day of the same year. But they were not twins. How could this be so?
