| Imported post Yep - ok, the force is strong in you. Here's a toughy: A cage with a bird in it, perched on a swing, weighs 4lb. Is the weight of the cage less if the bird is flying about the cage instead of sitting on the swing? Ignoring the fact that if left in an airtight box for long the bird would die, would the answer be different if an airtight box were substituted for the cage?

| Imported post <font color='#32CD32'>hmmm.................. In a cage I think it would weigh less, as the air pressure from the wings would not all be directed down, some would move laterally out of the cage. In an airtight box - I'm guessing here - but I think to remain in flight, there would be downward pressure in the same amount as the weight of the bird so there would be no change in wieght.

| Imported post Less the weight of the bird. All weight is caused by gravity, so if the bird is defying gravity i.e flying, then it's just the weight of the box/cage that would be registered. Peter |

| Imported post But the bird has to create a downward thrust equal to its weight to fly, therefore, if all the downward thrust is registered on the floor of the cage Juz is right and Peter is wrong... Juz, you're not Dutch are you?

| Imported post Nope, by that theory if you stood 2ft under a flying chopper you would be crushed by the weight if it was the same as the standing weight of the whirlbird. As the clever guy said " I think, therefore, I'm not too sure!" Peter |
