| Imported post <font color='#000080'>The water level will fall. With the nuts and bolts in the boat and bouyant they will displace a quantity of water equal to their own weight. Once submerged in the water, they wiil only displace water equal to their volume, which, as the nuts and bolts sink, will be less.

OK Similar, What happens to the water level with an Ice cube in after the ice cube melts.

| Imported post <font color='#32CD32'>I think it would remain the same. Although only part of the ice would be submerged, Ice has a higher volume than the water that created it, so melted it would not affect the level................. right?

| Imported post <font color='#000F22'>It falls as the volume displaced by a block of ice is grater than that of the water. Think of a pint of skimmed milk left on your door step on a cold morning. g.

| Imported post <font color='#000080'>The obvious answer is that the water expands as it thaws out, raising the water level. But given the peculiarities of the behaviour of water between 4c and freezing that might not be the case. It would perhaps depend on the temperature of the surrounding water? Not certain on this one, even if it is simple physics. I've forgotten at some time in the past 19 years!

| Imported post Actually it is a bit of a tricky one to answer. Technically the ice displaces a volume of water equal to it's weight. And the weight of the ice cube is due to the volume of water contained in it. So in theory the amount of water in the cube will equal the water displaced. Therefore the water level will not rise or fall. However as Mark said water does expand when it warms up, so the water in the ice cube would expand, but the water in the glass would also cool, so it would contract. I guess this would cancel each other out. This being the case... Name 2 reasons why global warming and ice caps melting would increase water levels around the world. Daz

| Imported post OK, now I'm confused.... Mark - the first riddle - you appear to say the volume of the nuts+bolts decreases as they sink? Surely they are incompressible? Pls enlighten... The second one - ice displaces *more* than water so the volume in play is less once thawed, but as Juz says not all the ice volume was under surface necessarily, so wether water level falls is anyone's guess seems to me... My brain hurts! Dave.
