Would recommend this

Sparky750 A black could actually be live/ switch wire so you need to be careful not to put them all together if you can post a pic of what you currently have i may be able to help just reluctant without seeing it incase you end up with spikey hair

Sounds like you have what is called a loop in system.
There are a few outcomes to messing this up.
1 YOU COULD GET HURT, NOT A GOOD ONE.
2 You will trip your breaker / blow your fuse, then suffer the head shaking and tutting of the spark you get out to sort it.
3 The light you are changing will come on. great but it won't go off.
4 The switch for that room now switches the lights on and off in half the house.

Either send a pic as asked or maybe best have a browse through the yellow pages.

Best of luck John.
if its the loopin system the live wires and the switch wires (both live conductor's) should and i do say should be the same colour.

turn off the whole board and you wont get a shock

pic is the best option

I presume that on the light fitting side of the current block you will only have two/three wires. Cut the two/three wires coming out of the current connecting block going to the actual light fitting, poke this block up into the ceiling and connect the old wires into the relevent sockets on the new light fitting block you have.

I was on about cutting the two wires that come out of the connector and go to the lamp holder not any of the wires on the switch and feed side.
