| red is the old live coulor code as is a black neutrel . put the red and browns together and the blues and blacks together . turn off everthing in your fuse board as another light may have been picked up off the neutrels and a shock of a negitive will kill you faster than a live . turn everthing off and youll be safe . unless you fall off the ladder

| A black could actually be live/ switch wire so you need to be careful not to put them all together if you can post a pic of what you currently have i may be able to help just reluctant without seeing it incase you end up with spikey hair ![]()

| I'm glad you're seeking the proper advice. Some years ago I was helping a (not unatractive single female) colleague (with no ulterior motive in mind, honest) to renevate her house. As I can fit a plug, I was confident I could put up a light fitting. Interstingly neither the actual shock, or the resulting fall from the ladder actually injured me too badly and the scorch marks on the ceiling only took a few coats of emulsion to cover up.

| Do the red and brown go into one terminal in the ceiling rose, the blue and the black to two separate terminals?. If so it sound like Sparky says the black could be the switched live. If you're not sure which wire is which just lick them one at a time. Before doing this please get someone to video you. Disclaimer. Don't do anything l suggest unless you're a total feckin' muppet.

| I would completely ignore this. NOT the thing to do. Quote:
Sparky750 A black could actually be live/ switch wire so you need to be careful not to put them all together if you can post a pic of what you currently have i may be able to help just reluctant without seeing it incase you end up with spikey hair Sounds like you have what is called a loop in system. There are a few outcomes to messing this up. 1 YOU COULD GET HURT, NOT A GOOD ONE. 2 You will trip your breaker / blow your fuse, then suffer the head shaking and tutting of the spark you get out to sort it. 3 The light you are changing will come on. great but it won't go off. 4 The switch for that room now switches the lights on and off in half the house. Either send a pic as asked or maybe best have a browse through the yellow pages. Best of luck John. |
