The reason I use a Router, is that it allows me to specify a list of "authorised" MAC's (unique network card ID's) that the router will comunicate with. This way I know who is using my wireless connection, and it logs their web activity.

Hi Simon
You sound like just the man I need to talk to!
Have just gone broadband at home, but my son also wants the internet in his bedroom, so to avoid running very long cables up the stairs etc, I decided a wireless network would be the best solution. My PC does not have an ethernet port, so my broadband is connected between my NTL box and my PC (via an ethernet to USB adapter). What's the best/cheapest solution to go wireless - my son's PC has an ethernet port, and we're both running XP (him Pro, me home)?
Hope you don't mind me tagging on the end of this post.
Regards, and dive safe
Martin

I set up a system at home that consists of the broadband modem (Zoom) physically connected to a wireless router (US Robotics).

On my laptop (XP Home) I have a card (US Robotics) and on a desktop (XP Pro) a usb wireless adapter (Intel). The whole thing works sweetly with no physical connection between the any of the computers or the router.

It was damned frustrating setting it up but once I got it to work - ahhh blisss.

Also, I can pick up internet access (for Avantgo) with my PDA which also has wireless capability.

I haven't set a list of authorised MAC address yet - I'll have to do this.

You may have noticed by now that I have a tendency towards PC geekery.

Simon, can you connect you NTL box via ethernet to a router? If you can then it that's yer answer.

Yes, the NTL ethernet modem connects straight to the WAN port on the wireless router. With something like the linksys wireless router I use it works (but without any security) out of the box.

PC geekery? If your going to use labels like that i'd best not tell you about the 1200 feet of cat5 in the walls, and the managed gigabit switch that runs the wired portion of the network

MartinS,
the easiest way would to go for a wireless router (see the links earlier in the thread) and to shove a wireless card in each PC. This gives you the best security and means that you can move your pc around as well (should you wish).

however the costs are quite high, you would need
1 Wireless Router at £79
and
2 Wireless Network Cards at £36 each

Please note that these links are for kit that uses the newer 54 Mbit wireless networking standard, if you want to go for 802.11b (the older 11mbit standard) you could probably knock £20 -£25 off the cost.

Here I have shown Belkin as they seem to be the cheapest.

Hope this helps

Hi Fi,
TRY RADMIN
http://www.radmin.com/download/
Bloody hot bit of software (simple too) needs to be installed on both computers, file sharing and a lot,lot more
If you went to www.astalavista.com and searched for the code and then registered the program with the found code, you would be breaking the law
