Flight planning advice - to the US

OK, I am heading over to the US and have to be in philly for a few days but also wanted to visit a mate in detroit area.

i had a look at flights and found that it was ridiculously expensive to fly into detroit, then internal flight DT to PHL, then PHL to LON. which was the logical choice since that is what I wanted to do.

but it works out a heck lot cheaper easily 1/2 price for me catch a return flight LON to PHL then return internal PHL to DT. but that means thats any extra flight I have to catch and a waste of time.

now am I being an idiot or is that what normally happens? is it like those train tickets where it only costs like 1 pound more for a return? thats why the 2nd option is half the price.

just wanted to know so i can stop wasting my time to find a cheaper option 1 if option 2 is always going to be cheaper.

Cheap is still not going to be option, 3 airlines went bust last week We (USA) have now got a taste of what the UK had 20 yrs ago.
The train last time I looked is very expensive and the plane because of distance is best way to go, driving is 584 miles 8 hrs 32 min on highways thats from center of Detroit to center of philly

Hi,

Generally triangular routes are expensive because you are in effect taking 3 one way flights. The return tickets are cheaper because the airline has a guaranteed customer both ways.
