I have a similar problem with a Dlink wireless connection to my router. Direct connection everything works fine.
Wireless, everything works OK except email. I found the problem was to do with MTU's,

Alright more info... I managed to improve the situation by connecting to the admin web page on the router and somewhere is a option for MTU (I think it was the WAN menu) I decreased the MTU from 1500 to 1000 and it seemed to be much better.
I never did resolve it completely and it still throws the occasional wobbly but to be honest I can't be arsed to look into it any more.
