| Plane related question Knowing there's a few Aeronautical people on here, I thought I'd ask. What are the upturned bits on the end of planes wings for ? The bit that's at 90 deg to the wing, like on a 747 etc. Cheers

| They're called winglets. In laymans terms: The tips of a "normal" wing create drag. Drag reduces your speed and increases your fuel consumption. Winglets alter the airflow over the wingtip and help to provide "clean" air rather than "turbulent" air over the wingtip. This in turn decreases drag and reduces fuel consumption by up to 30% in some aircraft. So it's quite a financial saving as well as environmental etc. There was good money fitting them a few years ago. A contractor could expect to take home £2k a week if a pair were fitted in under a week!

| Thank you. The suggestion was made to me it was stability, bit like the way eagles wings turn up at the end. Fountain of knowledge YD, I love the place. Have a green.

| They stop the bernoullis from falling off the edge of the wing
__________________ Gareth Images of Life Photography DIR Team Foxturd Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both. The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits. |

| Is it not to make the wingspan the standard width of a UK house then? Chris |
