| I had 2 Capris in my youth: a 1.6XL MkI (facelift version) and a 2.0 GL Auto MkIII. Expect less than 20 mpg from a 2.8i. They're becoming something of a collector's car these days and a 2.8i, in any variety & in good nick, will cost serious money. My choice would be a MkIII 3.0S Look out for any rust at the top mount of the Macpherson struts. Most will have some and a little bit is fixable, but forget anything with serious rust that hasn't been properly fixed; i.e. cut out and replaced with a new mount, Isopon is no good here The rear suspension is leaf springs and a live axle so they're pretty sturdy. Even if the rear shocks are fucked, it won't cost much to replace them. The later OHV Four-cylinder Kent & V6 Essex engines are a joy to work on and I'm sure parts will still be widely available. The non-injection versions have Weber carbs that are a piece of piss to maintain. Elsewhere they were pretty good and it shouldn't be too difficult to find out without too much rust. I want a go in it when you get one |

| You see there's a lot of people trying to rationalise an emotional decision. There will be Capri, it's just what type, and where from. Besides, if it's crap I can sell it for the same I bought it for, and get something else which is significantly silly instead. Digs. |

I d have a tame mechanic coming along in the shape of father in law, who rebuilds classic cars, but he knows not a lot about Capris. But they don't seem complicated from what I can see. Digs. |

| I would only look at the 2.8i or the 3.0s, anything else will be gutless. Juz

| Penny has dropped about the tax exempt thing... your getting it mixed up with classic insurance... Any car over 15 years old, will qualify for classic insurance... it limits the miles you can do to a couple of thousand a year, but will bring the cost down to something silly like £100 fully comp with breakdown cover...

| Ignore all that stuff about poor handling. Admittedly they'll suddenly oversteer with no warning and leave you in a field but that's all part of the fun of owning a Capri. If I was in the market for an 1970s car it would be a BMW 3.0 CSL or a Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS |
