Long Distance Swimming

I have set myself a target and want to take up long distance swimming.

I used to swim a lot and am generally fit but want to prgoress to some bigger distances. Is anyone part of a club, preferably midlands based, that does this sort of thing. Ideally I want to complete some long distance open water swims.

Can anyone help with this, training plans, contacts etc..?

Thanks in advance,

Ben.

Hi Ben,
You may find this of some interest. Swimming Without Stress

I found them while looking for some open water training for triathlon. I know they offer training camps in Pembroke and it looks like there is plenty of other info on their website.

I swim like a stone so I can not make much of a sugestion, howevera while back I read in the Daily Telegraph of a Travel compnay that organises long swim holidays. One example was in Croatia where you swim out to an island (I thin you are escorted by a boat). Apparently you need to be fit but nothing exceptional, with practise before hand many people can do it.

I try to dig out the article.

You might mean Swimtrek - they are out here training at the moment (for cross channel swims ). I've tried to find the link, but it drops out as soon as it is loaded.

BTW - they are all as mad as a box of frogs.

EDIT: Chris was right

It's a long way off yet though, a looooooooong way

Thanks again,

Ben.

Ben

I was trying to get into the Swimtrek website last night and today, and was having problems with it - I spoke to Dave (one of the guys here) and he said the website is being updated - so if you have a problem, please bear with it.

Have you considered Swimtreking in Gozo, and then you could dive too in your time off? (not that you get much, it is pretty full on, but those who are swimmers/divers manage at least to get a couple in . Just a thought
