Police save swimming boar's bacon

Wild boars live in woods on the Costa Brava
Spanish police who launched a rescue operation to save what they thought was a swimmer in distress were amazed to find a struggling wild boar.
Coastguards believe the 50kg (110 pound) animal had been swimming for three days before it was picked up 3km (1.8 miles) at sea off the Costa Brava.

The creature is thought to have been swept to sea after falling into the water and being caught in a current.

The boar was said to be suffering from hypothermia but was in good shape.

The police launch patrolling the coast near Arenys de Mar noticed the splashing and headed out to take a look, thinking it was a swimmer was in trouble.

A police spokesman said: "We had a job getting him into the boat, he was struggling so much. But that's normal with such creatures.

"For them attack is the best form of defence."

The boar, believed to be from the woods near the river Tordera, is reported to have fallen, exhausted, into the police officers' Zodiac inflatable when they dragged it from the water.

But it apparently regained strength enough to take a lunge its rescuers, rocking the boat.

The boar was later taken to the wild animal rescue centre at Torreferrussa.

Imagine diving and spotting a wild boar!

Curiously wild boar can be very delicate creatures. In the vineyards they eat the berries individually off the bunch and spit out the skin and leaving the stalk intact on the grapevine. They are tough as hell though, in 1993 a car in front of me hit a wild boar doing around 80km, the car was a wreck whilst the wild boar flew a couple hundred yards, after a short while stood up, shook himself and run off!
