Bo11ocks!
In a heated discussion with an Egyptian friend yesterday I described something as being a 'complete load of bo11ocks'. He said "What does bo11ocks mean?" I explained what they were and he said "But these are a good thing!". "Yes" I replied "and when something is really good we describe it as the dog's bo11ocks".

How do I explain these two sayings?!?

Why does flammable mean the same thing as inflammable?

If you dust something, are you removing something, or adding something?

If I splice something, am I joining it or dividing it?

I assume the 'bollocks' thing originated from saying "talking bollocks"; that is to say that one is speaking without thought or consideration or from a base position governed by anything but coherent thought? Just like a bloke around a sexy woman? Actually, any woman where there is a chance of some horizontal action.

Dogs bollocks? Possibly an extension of saying like 'the cat's whiskers' presumably after drinking the cream? Then you get the 'bee's knees' which rhymes but is nonsensical. After that you get 'dog's bollocks' or 'mutt's nuts' etc. I suppose you could say that something is good and easily identifiable just like a dog's bollocks which are in plain view?

In short, I don't have a clue and am 'talking bollocks'!
