| Not that anyone would give a pickled dog turd for my oppinion but here it is any way. I've been diving long enough to remember when DIR was not very well known in this country. Not that it is now to anyone other than those who have a particularly keen interest in diving. It is still an emerging "branch" of diving in my mind. I had never heard of GUE until joining YD and it is only through reading some recent thread that I found out what it is. In my limited knowledge I would not consider GUE to be an "agency" in the same sense as BSAC, PADI or IANTD etc. Its principals are not yet sufficiently enfranchised throughout the diving world to be given "agency" status. DIR is a style of diving, a rather eliteist style of diving at that. Padi teach you to dive. BSAC teach you to dive. GUE tell you to do it differently or you can't join. If I went to a GUE evangelist and said "I'd done some snorkelling on holiday and I'd like to learn to scuba dive" I'd be told to go and learn with PADI or BSAC first then come back when I've learnt to dive. And as they are true agencies, I could do so anywhere in the country if not the world. But back to the question at hand. The DIR/GUE sub-forum is no big deal. If that particular style of diving lights your candle or it just seem to be a natural progression for a very competent diver looking for the last word in refinement, then no harm is done. Some posts can make it difficult for incompetent holiday diving strokes like me to discern good practice and good advice from uneccessary faffing. Labelling GUE specific posts as such might help the likes of me tell their arses from their elbows. Those posters who tend to be "in yer face" about their prefered style of diving would be in yer face anyway. As for me, well, the whole DIR/GUE thing is as good a reason as any to adopt pink and yellow kit, odd fins and hoses exactly 1.95m long (with a tag stating as much). Like I said who gives a pickled dog turd anyway? |
