| You don't mention budget, Fiona but I'd also consider a Skoda Octavia estate. Good engines, reliable build and tough. Residual values do drop, so you could get a 3/4 yr old one for around £8,000.

| I got a late 56 plate Passat Estate S 1.9 TDI with 25000 miles for just under £11k. Great dive car, loads of space, not the fastest but fast enough. Then again my Dad is a motor trader so expect it would cost you a bit more from a garage. If you wanted to spend more get the 2.0 TDI SE, more toys and quite quick. More popular so reflected in the price tag. They do a nice rubber boot mat too which keeps salt water at bay

| I learned to drive when I lived in America where everything is automatic then I mashed my left shoulder when I came back here so for a couple of years I'd no choice but to drive automatics. Now my preference is still autos as I'm a lazy git. Most of the auto diesels on offer were t'owd mon's cars like Merc and Audi estates or salesrepmobiles. I'd looked at buying a Freelander for the company when the leased L200 went over the mileage allowance but they looked like they'd get trashed quick, they were pokey inside and that ridiculous tailgate is just waiting to go wrong. Not sure if the new ones are any better. In the end I got an Isuzu Rodeo Denver pickup which I absolutely love, the perfect divemobile. Quote:
