| Imported post I actually did try and read the books when I was younger, but I was never really caught by all that fantasy stuff. Too much walking and fighting.... I was *very* annoyed that it won the Big Read - I'm convinced that was because of the film, rather than the book. There were far better books on the list. Steve, I did warn you I was about to commit a gross act of treason......sorry! Lou

yes it was very evident that the books that came top of the big read were the ones that had been made into films/adaptations. and yes that will skew the balance a bit because books that have been televised will reach more people. however, why are they chosen to be televised in the first place? because lots of people like them and they're considered to be good books! |

| Imported post <font color='#0000FF'>LOTR is one of those films that have to be seen in a good cinema or DVD/good TV with no distractions. Pure agony would be to watch it in on those airplane screens! My local cinema is a large room in the local firestation, last weekend they showed 'Kill Bill' - that was quite rough of a film.

| Imported post I will be going to see the third film but, being a purist and a massive fan of the books I'm expecting to be a little peeved at all the extra crap added in to make it more Hollywood.

| Imported post Haven't seen the film yet but am definitely going over the holiday period. Now you may have seen or heard about various nutters that run round woods and the like beating up goblins and orcs and stuff.... well I'm one of those, so if you wanna laugh, (or maybe you want to join in?) have a look at www.bearsfaction.com The reason behind my sign in name should become apparent!! Anyway, AFAIAC, what's "better" or "best" etc is only ever a matter of personal opinion, some folk think Thomas Hardy is the epitome of literature, some think it's Tolkein, some think it's Albert Camus, some think it's James Joyce or Roddy Doyle! ... I say "Vive la difference!" no reason why a person couldn't like any or all equally, depending on the mood they're in that week. |

Also the big read was about the most popular book, not the best written |
