Similarly, there's all this outcry about this Xmas having the highest number of re-runs ever. I quite liked Ian Hislop's point - "What about The Snowman?". Can you imagine the outcry if they didn't show The Snowman?

However, the main problem I have with covers at the moment is that they're msotly being done by crappy manufactured bands because they're too talentless to do anything other than covers of populr songs or insipid ballads

I'm personally glad the Darkness didn't get No. 1 as I think that whilst they're an excellent band, it's a fairly crap Xmas song. But then, I'm currently listening to Lush's "Hypocrite", so what do I know

I dont think it is all covers but the Pop Idols' cover of Lennon's War is over, amply demonstrates the point.  

OTOH, Johnny Cash's last few albums demonstrate how covers can be better than the originals.

I have a CD of a number of bands covering Sabbath stuff - its excellent (well, except for the Bruce Dickinson cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath).  But I take the point about PoPIdols etc - but then thats not music right - its just PAP entertainment for the gullible GBP (Great British Plebs).  It's just a music equivalent of 'Fakin' It' - only problem is where the suckers, sorry, contestants really believe what they are doing if serious stuff - just look at the fools from the last series - died without a trace after just a few months.

I live in hope that this will be the last of this kind of nonsense - it would be nice if they took the format and applied it to real bands and musicians that write their own material - and no, not in a Pop School / Academy (or whatever that programme was) way either.

It seems a sad reflection of the state of British Music scene that for a period this year there was not a single British single in the US charts - first time in over 40 years!

Frankly I like the idea of a non-christmassy Christmas #1, suits my Bah! Humbug!! view of christmas, and as Mark has pointed out, some people don't/aren't necessarily having a great time at Christmas and the constant barrage of faux jollity can be very hard work if you're not in that frame of mind.

I thought "Cheeky Christmas" should have been #1. Their talents are astounding. From the "highest peak" to the "lowest bottom" their, err, vocular range is amazing.

I think the current version of mad world comes from the cult film `Donnie Darko`. Being a cult film, you won`t have to watch it all the way thru` because even if you do, it still won`t make sense.
