| My parents have a newfoundland (my fault entirely) and they have lino pretty much throughout the downstairs - hallway, dining room, kitchen. 'Barney' definately appreciates it as he gets very hot under all that fur (even with a £30 monthly haircut)! Warning - newfies (unless it was just Barney) can be very lazy and when he was a puppy he could not be bothered in the morning to stand up to go outside for a wee, he just did it where he lay! It is definately worth considering flooring that is easy to mop on a regular basis! |

| We have carpet througout all our rooms, apart from the porch and utility. We also have 2 x collie crosses who are very lively and are taken out twice a day. We have a very large kitchen/dining room now (completed last year) and have that fully carpeted. So, far we have no problems with muck etc., however, with a Newfie I guess one of the main problems will be slobber. I used to be a dog obedience trainer and one of my pupils had 2 Newfies who she used to do trials with. They stank and slobbered everywhere. So, how are you going to protect all your belongings from getting covered in the "slimey stuff!" Even if you get good flooring. ![]()

(Realistically most of the downstairs will be fairly 'minimalist' but cozy with munchable things like tv remote having to be kept out of reach I've been recommended washable paint for the walls too!

This girls dogs were called Daphne and Sienna, one chocolate brown and the other black and I could tell you some stories about them, but not on a full stomache. Good luck with them ![]()

The 2 Newfies used to make a beeline straight for the containers and eat all the goodies, if the containers were closed, they'd break them open! We used to have a laugh, but the owner claimed it was a conspiracy to try and teach her dogs bad manners!!!! However, I can't speak for all Newfies, but the 2 in my class were never the most energetic and any task took ages. I was assured that the moved better when doing their water trials, but thankfully never got to see this. I enjoyed being a trainer, but sadly the phrase we used is only too true of todays pet owners - "a dog is only as good as its owner, you put the effort in to train and reap the rewards later with a well behaved pet!"

| You need patience! My parents thought that a Newfie would need loads of exercise but their bones are not fully developed until they are about 2 years old so you can't walk them too far (they get exhausted easily). Jumping is also not advised in the first few years because of developing joints. I personally find Newfies to be boring dogs, we used to have labradors who charged after balls on the beach/ in a field but the Newfie walks to the toys and does not retrieve them to you (you have to walk up to him)! You should invest in a haltie because choker collars do not work (for training them on the lead), they have so much fur thet can't feel the choker! Slobber.....oh yes, my parents walls are covered, they are having to routinely wipe them down and re-paint. Another piece of equipment I recommend is a 'blower', it is like a vacumn in reverse and dries the dog in minutes when he comes in from the rain/ having a swim etc. Towels are pretty much useless. |

I'm not the most energetic of people so am well matched with the Newfoundland I've heard of those blower things. Sounds like a good idea!! Cheers!
