I personally find Newfies to be boring dogs, we used to have labradors who charged after balls on the beach/ in a field but the Newfie walks to the toys and does not retrieve them to you (you have to walk up to him)!

You should invest in a haltie because choker collars do not work (for training them on the lead), they have so much fur thet can't feel the choker!

Slobber.....oh yes, my parents walls are covered, they are having to routinely wipe them down and re-paint.

Another piece of equipment I recommend is a 'blower', it is like a vacumn in reverse and dries the dog in minutes when he comes in from the rain/ having a swim etc. Towels are pretty much useless.

You are so right about Newfies being lazy, well not quite lazy, but everything is done in their own time.

The lady I referred to who I used to teach used to flogg herself to death trying to get her dogs to be motivated enough to do the exercises we practised. I admired her determination though, as most people would have given up.

I personally do not like Halti's, but these types of dogs need some sort of restraint, as they are heavy and powerful and a Halti is fit for the purpose with Newfies. That's unless you have an impeccably trained mutt of course.

I used to trrain with a girl from a farm who tried to obedience train a Doberman. Unfortunately the dog was nearly taller than the girl and it pulled her all over the training room. It was a great laugh to see this girl being dragged to every corner of the hall. However, we provided her with a Halti and she was fine after that.

I'm guessing it's better to try to get behaviours embedded from an early age rather than trying to "teach an old dog new tricks"?

The Newfy breeder said that the dogs look really big next to most people but next to me they just looked normal sized


I'm going to have to work on getting a lot hairier so I can do the rest of the "dogs look like their owners" thing
