| A long time ago ca 1968 used to be able to get a whole tinned chicken which meant that my mom could serve up a standard Sunday lunch whilst camping. Also sweetcorn soup is great, but is a big mistake when there are a load of corn flies about |

| Camping store dried food is often relatively tasteless. Much better option is boil in bag food from the supermarket. It is a little heavier (if you're packing it around), but far more tasty. Jacket P's are great and versatile. My staple campsite breakfast is Jacket P's cooked in the fire the night before, break them up in the morning and fry with butter, bacon, beans and an egg or two. Makes a big potato omlete thing. Sets you up and is quick to make in the cold mornings. To cook jacket p in the fire you need to wet them with water, rub on some sea salt, and double wrap in foil. Then just chuck them into the outside of the fire for an hour or so turning after every beer. The water stops the skin sticking to the foil. You can also bake them in a tin coffee can. Porridge oats are another staple. You can have just porridge, or mix with corned beef or spam. Or smash up a fruit and nut chocolate bar and have chocolate porridge. mmmmmm.... Get the oats that mix with water, not milk. Dried milk rather than milk milk. You wont taste the difference after a day or two and it doesnt go off. Butter. A wedge of butter makes everything taste better! Take plenty of salt, sugar and spices. You can make anything tasty with that. Ginger tea. Lovely and warming for the morning.

Recipes... left over mash, bit of flour, an egg, fry into potato scones. Packets of dumpling mix are great in stews. Sosmix will keep forever and you can have instant sausages whenever you want. Halloumi is lovely done over a fire, again it keeps well. Chinese supermarkets sell great packs of sauces very cheap which are good for camping if you can get veg. The little tins of tomato puree from the supermarket are essentials. My fave for any shellfish, tomato and feta stew from Greece. Finely chopped onion fried for a couple of minutes, then some finely chopped tomato, another few minutes, tin of tomato puree, glass of white wine, slug of brandy, a couple of spoonfuls of dill, mix it up, chuck in the shellfish and let it all cook for a few minutes more. Crumble a load of feta over it, put the boat in the embers with the lid on and let it bake for 5-6min then a final sprinkle of dil. Crusty bread is absolutely essential!!! A great book is Claudia Roden's old middle eastern cookbook. Most of the recipes grew out of campfire cooking so their modern equivalents adapt well to camping. Falafels are piss easy to make and babaganoush or teradot with a pack of toasted pitta is perfect getting pissed in the evening fare. Cheers, Stuart

| Chopped garlic and ghilli in olive oil heated in a pan (with some chopped sundried tomatoes if you fancy). Toss in a load of al dente spaghetti. I'd put grated cheese on top but I know Turbs doesn't like it. Loads of salt and pepper on too.
