Being a YD newbie i'd like to know what goes on here and what doesn't. I'm sure that is mostly common sense but i'm sure there are other newbies who love diving/ taking about diving/ listening to more experienced diver's views who can accidently (or deliberately for that matter) offend/ annoy regular forum users. Any comments with regards to this would be appreciated.

Also can someone tell me what a post consisting of only a fullstop means? And what is 'greening' someone all about?

Welcome Naomi (belated I know)
A full stop usually means someone has edited and deleted the content of their post.
Greening (and redding):
If you look at the top right corner of any post there is a scales symbol.
If you approve of a post you can click the scales symbol and a box pops up. Pop your comment in there and you've just greened (or redded) someone
To see if you've been greened click user CP at the top of the screen and you can see comments made to you.

Although until you have a certain number of posts you can only "grey" them, I think it's 50 posts but someone more knowledgable will be along.
The easist way to offend is by taking a strong position, for or against some strongly held myth such as all DIR divers are gods. Or that all CCR divers are mad as a box of frogs and should be saved from the error of their ways.

In other words any time it's a week day or the weather is carp and diving has been blown out, you come on here ask a sensible question, get 3 sensible answers and 10 pages of thread stealing bollox.

Get stuck in, ask away, post your views from your perspective and enjoy.

One word of advice, ignore anything Howard (aka Diving Dude) says, he's a pikey old letch.
