I hope this was an impending failure and not something brought about by a non Compaq standard psu. Like I said before, it's a pretty rotten trick using standard connector with different pin-outs, shame on Compaq. Capacitors are not un-replacable depending on what's around it and what else has gone.

It looks like a new PC more or less she's on her way to pick up a m/b bundle and i'll fit it for her tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help guys
and

its similar to what happened to my old one.

Good that its sorted.

Check the CPU and RAM as well. just in case they need replacing as well.

I know (HND Electronics) but the age of the m/b is such that we might just be putting plaster on a severed artery. Plus if there is a problem with the PSU compatibility then we won't know what other components have been damaged.

I've identified that we could go out and buy a 2nd m/b and p/s for about £30 but she'd prefer to upgrade it.

At least it'll have warranty and should tide her over a couple more years.

given the age and spec of the machine this is what I'd have predicted would be the outcome from the PSU replacement requirement.

This will also extend the life of the system now that a new case and PSU have also been purchased...looks like all that's left of the original will be HDD and CD/DVD

just a thought, but with a PC this old, the disk drives will be IDE cable connections - does the new Mobo have these or is it expecting all to be SATA?

Yeah....there is one ATA slot and 4 SATA slots. Sixie has two HDDs so I was going to daisy chain them.

The floppy is surplus to requirements so I haven't even considered it.

She's also bought a CD/DVD Rewriter which has a SATA interface IIRC.

Well.....the good news is that we've finally got Sixie's puter up and running but she may be out of circulation while she downloads 60,000 updates and programs
