Exclamation Help Sixsquid's PC is still FUBAR!!!!!

OK.....further to Sixies plea for help here My PC keeps shutting down she went out and bought a new case/psu because the psu wouldn't fit in the old Compaq case.

After dilligently transferring everything over she powered up and.....nothing happened!!!

She called me and over the course of this evening we've stripped it down to the following.

We took the old power switch and LED block across to the new case and installed that.

On power up it indicated a PSU overload.

So we basically went step by step unplugging EVERYTHING.

In the end all we had was the switch the PSU and the motherboard. Still PSU overload!

Finally we swapped the original PSU back and it fired up.

She has a Deskpro EN Mini Tower and the manuals can be found here Compaq Deskpro EN Desktop PC series -  Manuals (guides, supplements, addendums, etc) - HP Business Support Center

She's bought this case/PSU combi http://www.apextechusa.com/docfile/pc373.pdf

The only manual I can find for it is this http://www.apextechusa.com/support/PCManual.pdf

I've written to the case manufacturer asking if they're aware of any problems but in the meantime I thought I'd appeal to the YD massive and see if anyone knows why this might be?

Do Compaq have a unique ATX connector or something?

If you know Sixies number and have a solution then please give her a call as she's without a PC at the moment. If not the post a message or PM me and I'll relay to her.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, not a Compaq man but IBM use standard ATX power supplies so I would have thought Compaq do as well.

Check the colour and position of the power cables....the colours do mean something. As long as the two plugs match you should be all right.

The fact that it powers up with the old power supply (assuming you left it in the new case and just plugged the old supply in) proves the board and power switch is OK. This really only leaves you the power supply.

Don't rule out a faulty new power supply.

HTH

Nah haven't ruled that out but I have a bad feeling that Compaq do things very slightly differently......we'll see.

I can't justify it, but I've a bad feeling of non-standardness towards Compaq PCs...

I can justify it, I've been working on them for years! They are often non standard parts, you may well need to get a compaq PSU for it.

Yeah, I had the same thought thinking about it last night, remembered an old boss of mine winging about Compaq non-compatability. it would be a right rotten trick to use the same connector with a different pin out. Is it possible to check against a standard pin out?

Does this help?

<quote>
It has been my experience with the few Compaq supplies
that I have examined that they use the same industry standard color code.
3.3V=Orange, 5V=Red, 12V=Yellow, -12V=Blue, -5V=White(may not be
present)
Common=Black, 5Vstandby=Purple. PSOn is usually Green. PwrOK=Gray
You will have to ground the on to common, green to Black, to turn it on.

Check the power cables are in the same place on both plugs......

edit: you can buy a new compaq p/s from here https://www.serversupply.com/POWER%2...20/200%20WATT/

Well...this morning I received a call from Sixie......it looks like the m/b is no more

One of the components (probably a capacitor) was seen glowing red and emitting noxious fumes.

It looks like a new PC more or less she's on her way to pick up a m/b bundle and i'll fit it for her tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help guys
