We use Parallels, but same difference.

However, I know coherence mode's good but the Mac guys are resistant to us running windows on the mac, and TBH, unless you're running a 8-Core Mac Pro, running VMWare fusion or Parallels does sap CPU and RAM.

As it happens, I have under my desk at work (Albeit temporarily until I deploy it. However, it's been there 6 months so it's less than temporary! ) A Mac Pro with;
  • Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  • 8GB (4x2GB) RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3
  • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
  • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

I have it boot into OS-X, but then use Parallels to load a few different flavours of Windows, and a couple of different Linux Distro's running things like Nessus

Problem we have is that we need to upgrade the version of office on the macs, but whilst the majority can save-as in 2003, we aren't in an urgent hurry and there's more pressing issues.

It's not like we weren't in the same position with many of the Microsoft Office upgrades in the past

As it is, I'm currently playing with VMWare ESX and Vmotion Amazing tech.

Who're Parallels?

But seriously, Fusion is much faster and hogs less resource. (but then I would say that!)

ESX is a fabulous product... have you tried the HA / DRS capability yet? I love it when you see automatic load balancing going on... that's clever... especially as VMotion does it seamlessly.

[/vmware geek off]

I'm certain that the link that Adrian posted is the answer to this red x problem. (My experience is that it only crops up on certain PC's - and an update would explain that.) I don't think it's anything to do with the normal Mac/PC issues.

Fusion - wow, what an impressive product! OK, I'm running it on an early 08 8 core Mac Pro (and that thing cand probably run anything fast) but the performance is hugely impressive. My previous experience of a PC emulator was Virtual PC on system 8/9...
