| Sixy, Now that you have a new motherboard - type in the Manufacturer and model details into google to get to the manufacturers site. once at the web site - there should be a support section. the XP sound drivers will be available from there better still - what is the make and model of your motherboard that Ian installed for you and I'll get you a link.

| ok.. here you go.. I would suggest from the top row from the list.. Foxconn - Support - Downloads the download button is to the right and should allow you to download drivers that cover all the 946gz7ma motherboards.

| It downloaded as a zip file. I managed to open this and find a "setp.exe" so I ran that. It installed Realtek Sound Manager and then wanted a restart. I now have Realtek in my program files and I think that allows recording etc but I still don't have sound and the sound and audio in control panel is still greyed out. Clearly I'm being a dumb arse but, as you know, I'm pretty out of date and am used to what I had. I appreciate the ongoing assistance Thanks

| that is strange - as the 90mb file are the RealTek audio drivers for your motherboard.. You don't have a separate sound card do you?

Like I said it downloaded as a zip file and I selected setup.exe and that ran loading a prog to record etc.. I suspect there is something else I need to do and I have tried the other.exe files but nothing happened I have a screen dump in a word doc showing all the files. Other .exe files are alcchkid ALCXDEV Chcfg - I tried this one, selecting extracting more files then nothing happened GETDXVER - tried this too SetCDfmt - tried this Setup ---- the one that downloaded Realtek program Update files (as far as I can ascertain) alcupd Alcupd64 Removing files (as far as I can ascertain) alcrmv64 alcrmv9x Maybe I need to do something within the Realtek program ? Am I correct in thinking that sound & audio bit in control panel shouldn't be greyed out if this was successful? More thanks EDIT : and I may be way off here but, looking at the files and folders within the zip file, are these drivers for XP? EDIT again. I can see it says XP Maybe I should just try downloading it again. If so should I un-install Realtek first?

| Your motherboard is made up of lots of different components - the inbuilt Soundcard being one of them. The inbuild soundcard part is manufactured by Realtek and the product is called the AC97. So the drivers are in that file you downloaded. I am surprised that after installing them - they didn't work.. The model number you quoted above is definitely the right one yes? I'll download the same file and take a look.
