More thanks

EDIT : and I may be way off here but, looking at the files and folders within the zip file, are these drivers for XP?
EDIT again. I can see it says XP Maybe I should just try downloading it again. If so should I un-install Realtek first?
Correct.. if it worked then you should be hearing sound..

first edit: It said for XP..

second edit: if the first download was sucessful - then downloading it again won't make any difference..

downloading it myself to take a look..

I am surprised that after installing them - they didn't work..

The model number you quoted above is definitely the right one yes?

I'll download the same file and take a look.
Yes, checked the model number
and I know the audio cable from the front of the case has the Ac'97 connector plugged in.
Maybe it's my speakers.

I know the tiny internal m/b speaker is working 'cos I get a quiet little beep when email arrives but nothing I'd hear if I weren't sat at the pc

are there audio ports at the back of the PC you could try?

or a pair of headphones to test instead of speakers?

Speakers are in the back - just dug out some ancient ones
I'll try some headphones in the front. That's the socket connected from the case

Nothing from headphones in front port. Tried 2 different sets

Tried putting old speakers on, nothing. Restarted, still nothing. Control panel still greyed out and says I have no audio device

Picked up speakers and showed them to screen but no recognition
