As it turned out my previous 'reconditioned ex-corp Compaq' "bodged up" by my ex PC was a variation too far and perhaps the DIR Diving methodology may have proved an advantage in this case

| OK.....STOP!!!! LOL It's DEL on startup but it shouldn't need that. The drivers are on the CD that came with the motherboard. I clicked Single Click Installation when I set it up and so that should have loaded the sound drivers. There were some conflicts but they related to USB devices that had not yet been installed. I believe you may need to go into Control Panel/System then select the hardware tab. Select Device Manager. Scroll down and expand Sound, Video and game controllers. There should be a couple of items....usually something like Audio Codecs and Legacy Audio Drivers. Double click and make sure it says they're working properly. If that's all fine (Don't bother troubleshooting them yet) go back into the Control Panel and select Sound and Audio Devices. Click on Advanced on the Speaker Settings Volume Tab. Which speakers are selected in the drop down box? Let us know how you get on with that. |

In the control panel/ sound and audio there is nothing, all greyed out and cannot select anything I have just gone into BIOS and on the onboard devices, then "Azalia/AC97 Audio Select" was set to "AUTO" Can't see why that wouldn't work but I changed it to "AC97 Audio Only" then on restart the pc recognised the Realtek 97 previously downloaded. However ... it says the device can not be used and suggests un-installing and re-installing In Hardware/Device Manager/Properties it says "this device cannot start" Code 10 Control Panel, sound & audio is still all grey, saying no audio device, but now has the Realtek under the hardware tab So, shall I un-install then reinstall this Realtek and/or set the BIOS back to "Auto" ?

Have you tried using the CD and then running just the audio install? |

| Okay, so un-installed, re-installed, it still says this device cannot start Code 10 As far as I can tell the CD with the DVD just has Nero software on it and no Drivers Scuttler & Wilbo ... you have PMs
