I'll help you out...

Save the referendum for when the Tories get into Westminster and Scotland sees how bad a government they didn't vote for is...

The problem with potential Scottish independence is that the people who would be running our state are complete non-entities. We simply do not have the leadership at national level to make a competent executive.

If we take the Scottish Exectutive as an example, we see that it is largely comprised of jumped up toon cooncillors. Very few of them were any success in any area outside of politics and would likely be earning less had they carried on their commerical careers. If one watches any televised coverage of the Scottish Parliament, one cringes at the ineloquence of its members. Now, we might say, that this is irrelevant, actions speak louder than words.

What actions.

For one, i would certainly be jumping ship if we become independent, and i wouldnt count on me being replaced by our Spanish dwelling friend Sean Connery.

Most of England never vote for the government they get?

AIUI (although this might just be "TV talking") isn't there a Scottish saying from the past about "how can I be tried for treason when I never swore fealty ......." or something along those lines? Actually, I think I remember seeing it on the "Billy Connolly tour of Scotland".

My history knowledge is VERY poor but was it the Battle of Culloden that the English "kicked" Scottish but after the Scots had given them a kicking somewhere else? I say "kicked" because AIUI, a large proportion of the English troops were actually Scottish? Indeed, large numbers of both sides were 'foreigners'?

I thought you Northern bullies were always mean to us English due to raiding south of the borders and stealing all our best shagging sheep?

Just how much animosity is there. I've been to Scotland twice and really enjoyed the first trip. The second trip (Scapa) was enjoyable but a few of the locals were revolting and just hated the English more than they just hate divers.

I went to Wales once and was quite shocked at the open animosity. There was nothing overtly aggressive but everyone was just taking the piss and generally people I wouldn't particularly want to associate with.

Well, anyway, I haven't got time to worry about these squabbles as I have to worry about those bastards from the other end of Sidley! Bloody cheek, living at the other end of my village!

Who would lose most, in the long run from Scottish independence?

I've no strong opinions either way, I'm just asking the question.

Is there a danger from the way this is being played that there could just be a higher percentage of English people in England in favour of Scottish independence than Scots in Scotland? This poll is early days yet and it's a small sample size but it looks like that's how it's actually coming out.

Looking at this another way, how would English independence from the Union work out?

North Sea oil for Scotland is all very well but it's not going to last forever and I have a feeling that taking English tax revenues (particularly London) out of the Union money pot could well leave the other States in poverty.

I can see why Brown et al are so shit scared, they'd never get into power again, except by a miracle and it would never be landslide like 1996 etc.
