Plenty of sugary drinks and a good film to take your mind off of it...I grimaced my way through Lord of the Rings II for the first sitting of my shoulders (Lots of long straight lines across my shoulder blades) and ended up playing a PS2 game with the artists husband on the 2nd...

He beat me, but I think he had an unfair advantage!!

I think the forearm/shoulder may be uncomfortable as it'll be closer to the bone/muscle, but the underside shouldnt be too bad - unless it's got more nerves in?
One place I've been advised to avoid is the feet - they hurt and dont heal well.

Asprin thins the blood and is used for that in heart attack patients but Ibuprofen or codine containing painkillers dont tend to do that!

You'll be fine mate. Have a feed before hand. I've got full back and shoulder to mid forearm done. I quite enjoy being tattoo'd the only bit that hurt was the arm pit that bit is interesting

I've heard the same, I was diving a couple of years ago with a women who had a seahorse on the sole of her foot. She had to have it done 4 times as the skin is so thick, to get through the pain she learnt how to hypnotise herself.

My mate Rytch had the star of david done by himself on the ball of his foot. It grew out in weeks so he extended the needle further and went deeper. I heard the needle slowing in the skin due to the depth. That too grew out so he decided to do 100% pure evil on the arch of his foot as a joke to wind his mrs up. That didn't grow out lol

I wouldnt feel comfortable having a tattooist work on me if I was 'blacked out' (assuming she was semi-conciouss?) and I know very few artists would be comfortable doing that either - if something isnt right you cant tell them!

How did it look? I dont want to be rude, but I have a humerous image of a squashed sea horse :P

The seahorse looked great, very simple outline she had designed herself.

Not sure how the hypnosis worked, from what she said I got the impression she was fully aware of what was happening - but I don't have a clue about self-hypnosis and wouldn't want to try in case I didn't realise I had to wake myself up.

She did tell me she didn't feel anything the first time, so didn't bother to hypnotise herself the 2nd time and then passed out from the pain.

I've seen a fair bit of scarification over the past few years but that's the biggest piece I've seen! I have a fairly large tattoo on my lower back, that was painful enough to have done but I can't begin to imagine what that must have felt like! I quite like some of the designs that I've seen but I'm not sure what I think about that one...

I wonder what it'll look like in years to come?

This thread has got me thinking about what else I want diong on my back now, I've only been in the process of trying to think what I want for about 6 years now, I'm sure something large will come to mind some day

With scarification, you are left with, well, skin thats no your normal healthy type, but damaged, with issues like sunburn and infection being higher on the risk list, I think people are taking body modification a little to far, especially in the west, alot of tribes use scarification as ritual passage to adulthood and for marking your place in the ranks, but westerners are wearing them as an accessory, Ive no issues with people getting it done but Ill be sticking with the ink and the odd piercing.
