Shares...

What's the easiest/cheapest way to buy shares?

Seem to be pushed from pillar to post, and it's a big ocean out there!

Thanks

Pete

I've used TD Waterhouse in the past, you need to setup an account online, I'm not sure of the charges though.... If you want to do it the old fashioned way I can put you in touch with a stockbroker.

Thanks

Adam

the easisest and cheapest is to open an online share account.
There are loads of options but these guys are decent TD Waterhouse
there may be other cheaper ones but this outfit is a well respected global brand.
You simply pay a brokerage. Sometimes it's a flat fee and others it will be a % of the transaction (it all depends on how much you want to buy)
The good thing about electronic brokers is you don't have to talk to someone who will try and sell you his latest hot tip (errr that used to be me)
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Paul

Hi

Halifax do a sharebuilder account which is very cheap. The only downside is that you can only trade four times a month, so it is really suited for buying and holding them for a while, rather than short term gains.

TD Waterhouse are easy to use but the charges can mount up if you aren't trading regularly. Suss out what sort of investor you are likely to be and choose the best option for you.

TD Waterhouse hold your shares in a nominee account - their is no disadvantage to this except that you can't go to AGMs and cause trouble for companies . This may have changed since I sold up.

Thanks all... there are a few options out there, I think they are all as good as one another, but I'll give TDW's ago as you all seem to have had dealings with them.

I've used IMIWeb in the past, charged £10 per transaction a few years ago. I think they're called IWeb now, found them to be efficient.

I use Pershing share dealing through Abbey National they are also a nominee account which means they hang on to the certificates, as has been said in previous posts you don't get to vote in the agm's or anything like that, the other thing to consider is if you go for a nominee account they may not subscibe to drips (Divindend reinvestment plans) which means you will recieve money for the divindends and not more shares. They are relatively cheap for dealing and there is no minimum or maximum times you can use them.
