No problem at all just don't try to both make a claim for the same accident.

The insurance company will normally just ask 'who is the main driver'.

The big issue would be that in the event of a claim then each insurance company would only pay half of the total amount claimed. You'd have all the hassle of running two claims plus I guess the bother of explaining why you'd entered into this unusual arrangement.

Insurance is still I think governed by the concept of "ultra bona fides" - you have a duty to disclose to the insurance company anything that might be relevant to them determining whether to offer insurance or the size of the premium. This duty also applies during the period of insurance not just when you start the policy. I'm fairly sure that the fact that another policy covered the same car would be considered material. If you failed to declare it then the policy could be declared null and void.

I think the biggest problem will come down to ownership and insurable interest.

Many insurers will only allow the owner to insure the vehicle, for an insurer to let someone who is not the owner have cover, they would want evidence of an insurable interest.

I'm not sure whether the Motor Insurance Database (MID) would cause problems as this could highlight that a vehicle is already covered elsewhere, but I don't know if they crosscheck this at application, though I'd guess they do in the event of a claim.

If you want you can check the MID HERE.

Silly question but is this not going to be more expensive than one policy with the other user as a named driver.

My view

As far as I know, the insurance on the car must be held by the registered keeper of the car for personal policies. So no you cannot have two sets of insurance, but you can generate your own no claims discount as a named driver now, the downside is you have to then go on and insure yourself through them for your first policy. I think this is what you are getting at mate.

yup

don't use that suburb of Manchester as an insyurance company for a business as they don't honour NCB for named drivers when the named driver leaves the company he works for and gets his own vehicle.

more than 10 years of no accident driving and I pay through the nose as I have no NCB so to speak.
