No pay for me, but the work put me through St Johns Ambulance HSE First Aid Course. Saved me doing the PADI EFR and get a certificate to put on the wall. I'd much rather badger them for further First Aid courses than a few quid (less tax) each month.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm a first aider at work for the money, I'm not! Been one for 4 years here and not really thought about it. Don't get paid. It's handy to have and have used my knowledge on a number of occasions in the real world. The other benefit is it helps re diving too and paid for by work. Someone emailed me who I used to work with asking me about it and it got me wondering.

Yes, even if it's a few quid I'd like to be paid for it, but I'm not going to stop being one if they say no. You don't ask you don't get, in my book!

Thanks for replying everyone! It's interesting reading!

no pay for being a 4day first aider, did it altruistically then discovered it was company policy to have it to be a Authorised person for switching.

did fire marshal as the evac we did have was terrible and nobody seemed to be able to coordinate anything, so i took on the role and the last evac we did was a better performance.

first thing you get taught on fire marshal course is don't attempt to put out a fire as they get out of control quicker than you think. raise the alarm and evacuate.

or simply

Get out

Call the Fire service out

Stay out

I pay people a little extra. why not, its an extra responsibility we are asking them to perform. The cash isnt the point, becuase it's menaingless after all the tax etc. the point is recognising they have been trained and accept a responsibility that the person sitting next to them doesn't have. any responsibility without recognition is worthless.

The guy who taught me to dive used an old ambulance as a dive wagon.. Not sure if that was the right message to send though.. It still had the gurney in it.. and the two tones.. ( great for babbacombe hill )
