When you think about it, it is incredible that any of us have survived this long, it was such a dangerous world we all grew up in.

Anyway, getting back to the OP, one of these usually does the trick.

Over 300 people a year die from an accident at work, not including those driving at or for work.

Alot of those will be because something went avoidably wrong. I don't want one of those.

Relying on common sense hasn't stopped vehicles driving off with a fork truck still working in the back. Or banksmen being crushed by the vehicles they were directing. Proper risk assessment, training and safe systems of work do.

It's always seemed strange to me that some large stores think it ok for the public to mix with fork trucks. My clients' warehouses would never allow this - you will keep to the marked walkway unless you are working on the job in hand.

But your fork truck can not harm me. My fluorescent yellow jacket is like a shield of steel!

Thanks Richard... I've just had the gear picked up, perhaps I should have got one of these for the job instead!

Well I know for a fact that this is what my local Coles supermarket uses to transport and unload Crunchies....there's no other explanation.

this is why we have Risk assesments and Method Statements written from them.

unfortunately its the people who haven't got common sense we have to legislate for in the construction industry.

1 person every three years being killed on site from our company stats Thats too much. The Main contractors group was set up after the govt said to the industry as a whole " sort your act out on safety or we will pass very restrictive legislation" construction deaths have dropped but not as much as we would like then to, major injuries have dropped too- minors howver have shot through the roof- why?? because we encourage reporting of all accidents ss we can carry out epidiemiology and see what we need to do to reduce accidents.

the figures show that for every 65 major injuries and thats countrywide and parent company wide we get a death, it has been running on a three year cycle thios year however we have a blip and are at 40 already after 6 months, my guess is theres going to be a death on one of our sites in october.

thats why we are tight on H&S .

from a petrochem background i am surprised you think its all bad, I sat an induction at one refinery/storage depot where the plant manager came in and told us the plant had not had a lost time incident for 5 years and we were not going to change that, he set out his stall from day one and we acted accordingly.

I was on the tools for yearsand thinking bvack to some of the stuff I did I wonder how I survived as lomng as i did, sheer luck i think.

we have responsibilities under CDM and this has now changed so people cannot wriggle out of responsibilities like they used to.
I agree with you looking back at what we used to do i'm glad things have changed but surely it's getting over the top now or do you think 7 days to do 9 hours work is acceptable? By the looks of things it's going to get worse therefore driving prices up, until we get to a point where it's not worth carrying out anything but essential work due to the high costs. This is already starting to happen now so where do we draw the line?

when we PLAN work , we know what turn round the client tells us for review of MS/RA, we pass this down to any subcontractors and add time for us to review them when we receive them.

for emergency works we have standard Method statements written for miost contingencies, most risk assesments can be carried out quickly and incorporated, yes it is the back to front way of doing it MS first then RA but as both are living documents and subject to review this is an acceptable method.

it is all down to the Management system of the company if its set up well it will run well.

Open back of lorry

Get driver to accelerate to top speed

and slam on the anchors....

Voila ...lorry offloaded, and with less damage than using one of our forklifts!

Yeah, fair comment I guess but it's hard not to reach a viewpoint that the whole "safety culture" thing is all getting a little bit out of control when you read things like this and this.

I know where you are coming from, I myself work in public health and when in the UK, I was an authorised officer under HASWA but I can't but help think that things have gone a little bit too far.

I only hope this paranoid culture doesn't hit Aus with the same fury, although that's probably a forlorn hope and in some areas, it's already started to happen.
