Deuchar's IPA but any Pale Ale will go well (Green King isn't bad). In the absence of Pale Ale you could try a 70/- (80/- is a bit too heavy, you need a lighter beer to balance the battered fish) preferably Belhaven. Blonds work well too (but not Belgian ones), look for French or, if you can get it, Arran Blond (from Arran, surprisingly) or Northern Light (from Orkney)

Unfortunately, being in non-iron you're pretty well stuck when it comes to beer, not even the supermarkets stock the range of smaller brewery beers that we get over here. Becks is about as 'exotic' as I could find last time I was visiting the in-laws otherwise its all Guinness, Harp, Bud and MGD although the Chinese restaurants do TsingTao (shudder!)

If you know of a good beer outlet in Belfast please do tell.

And back on topic - a 10 oz glass of Hobart brewed cold green label Cascade Pale Ale - although I suspect that UK real ale fanatics would designate this as a lager.

TBH, I think traditional British beers, much as I like them, are a bit heavy and bulky to go with greasy F & C. Cascade Pale is light but more strongly hopped than most Aus beers, not far off a traditional IPA but a bit lighter.

As a 1st choice I go for a strong dry cider but we are talking beer so, Green King's IPA or Abbot Ale and big doorstep wedges of farmhouse loaf and butter. Mushie peas - sometimes, Tomato sauce - sometimes, salt-n-vinegar - always. Fcuk, its threads like this (and photo's like Snash's) that make me miss little bits of England, you can get all of the above in Thailand but it ain't quite the same

Sorry folks, but you are all wrong.

The best beer to have with fish and chips is...... <drum roll>............................. beer somebody else has bought.

The making of beer is just a waste of water.

A good quality cider or pear cider is the thing to have. Not the fashionable ones but local, strong and non see through.

Another vote for mug of tea. But it has to be in a big white mug which must be really cheap and badly chipped and there must be spots of grease floating on the surface.

White bread (cut diagonally for an ironic hint of poshness) with margarine on a white teaplate must accompany it.

I've just read in the paper that the standard chippy salt shaker is being reduced from 17 holes to a titchy 5 holes in an effort to improve health! A bit like serving diet coke with a Big Mac & fries. Apart from the added wrist action it is also going to severely affect the distribution of salt!!! That's another stamp...

Am I the only person who judges the quality of a chippy on whether they put the salt on first or (properly) vinegar first?
