<font color='#810541'>You may know that Iceland resumed &quot;scientific&quot; whaling in August 2003. The
Icelandic government intends to catch 500 whales over the next two years
(200 Minke whales, 200 Fin whales and 100 Sei whales). The move will pave
the way for even bigger catches in the future, aimed at the export market.
There is no 'scientific' justification for this whaling. The Scientific
Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has reviewed
Iceland's scientific programme; but does not support it.

It has been calculated that if Iceland stopped whaling a lot more tourists
would be willing to visit the country, bringing in far more money than what
they stand to gain from whaling. However, the government of Iceland has
overlooked the fact that many potential tourists are against commercial
whaling. If you are willing to pledge that you would be interested in
visiting the country if they stop whaling please read on.....

This is probably the best way to put pressure on the Icelandic government at
this stage. It is important that these rare and wonderful creatures stay
protected and although we'd all like to go after Japan too, Iceland is
currently a more realistic target. If you would like to add your name to
pledge which is being compiled by Greenpeace, you can do it online by
clicking the link below and it only takes a few seconds. They have already
submitted thousands of names to the Icelandic government and are working on
getting more to create a bigger impact.

I fully support this campaign.

HERE IS THE LINK:
http://act.greenpeace.org/col....=489848

You need to give an e.mail address, and they will send you one e.mail saying
thank you, but I promise you wont get any other e.mails or spam.

Please support this campaign, even if you don't support Greenpeace. I think
it is a worthy cause. A top whale scientist I know who works at Woods Hole
in the U.S gave me his opinion on the campaign.

&quot;I think a campaign aimed at Iceland has a fair chance of working since
they're much more vulnerable than Japan - that's what happened the last
go-round when Iceland shut down scientific whaling in the 80's because of a
fish boycott. &nbsp; Some bits of Greenpeace do a good job...&quot;.

Here is a BBC news article about the issue of commercial whaling in Iceland
&quot;&quot;Iceland tourism chiefs warn whalers&quot;
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2917267.stm

The well-known UK naturalist Sir David Attenborough says in a foreword that
Whalewatch's report shows &quot;there is no humane way to kill a whale at sea&quot;.

hmmm, wouldn't mind eating a few puffins - would get them back for the bits they've bitten off me!

method of catching a puffin for ringing studies:

1) insert hand into puffin burrow

2) yelp in pain as puffin clamps industrial-bolt-cutter bill round your hand

3) withdraw hand with puffin attached

4) put ring on puffin (still attached to hand)

5) work out how to remove puffin from hand

- or at least that's how it always seemed to be for me!

p.s. i was only joking about wanting to eat puffins

<font color='#810541'>Sign this petition to Japan's Ministry of the Environment, urging him to stop flouting our international agreement to protect whales via so-called &quot;scientific&quot; whale-killing.

<font color='#0000FF'>Ahem.

No matter what you guys claim whale hunting can be sustainable and is in no way different from other stuff we harvest from the sea.

Iceland will have no problems running tourism with whale watching while they're taking out sustainable amounts of whales.

I just don't get it. I just don't get why some (read: you) are so hung up on other countries' efforts to maintain a healthy harvesting from the sea. Instead of taking all the fish some are actually trying to find ways of taking out surplus from all parts of the foodchain. Why the heck do you care about whether some 1000 or 2000 whales are taken out of a stock of 110-120.000? How is it possible to call that wrong?

I say, clean up your own house. Find a way to maintain your own stocks of fish (Read: North Sea Cod). Put a focus on how meat is produced in the EU. Does any of you wonder why your steaks and bacon are so cheap?

Focus on the environment, please do, but have a look at your own doorstep before running over to the neighbour to see what he's got on his.

Sellafield anyone?

Grrrr.

Kyrre

I think Greenpeace et al would argue that these are not mutually exlusive and that they are doing just that.
