It's unlikely to be company policy but could be a rogue employee.

This has happened to me a couple of times recently ..... on cards used for fuel, and internet and phone purchases predominantly.

Each time the credit card company picked it up, told me about it and rushed new cards to me.

I didn't ask and don't have any other details other than what was on my online CC statement - just the contract number.

Never ever let your card out of your hands, at a restaurant if they give you the little folder that has the bill in it ask them to bring the card machine to your table or you go to the counter to pay. There are lots of people who work in these places being paid to skim cards. Also on the card holder not present transactions (if this happens to you) everything under £500 does not force the merchant to require authentication with the backend systems you can demand the money back as chip and pin was not used and the Scheme i.e. banks Visa / MC and so on will reclaim this from the merchant.

It depends. For things that can be converted to cash very quickly (read: sell on EBay), e.g. electronic goods, designer gear, etc, issuers will want all authorisations to be authenticated, no matter how little the amount. On the flipside, I can't imagine something like a hotel room booking be as high a risk; after all, who is going to stay in a hotel room paid for with a hot card?

I think that you'll find that the floor limit (i.e. the amout that they allow to be paid for without getting online authorisation) is a bespoke setting. The on-line authorisation used to a real PITA but broadband has really speeded things up and most of us don't notice the delay these days.

There are different floor limits depending on how people are paying (i.e. phone transactions, customer present but signed slip transactions and customer present and entered PIN).

Generally speaking the higher the floor limit the more it costs the shop to process the transaction.

    Egg

My CC company (Egg) are very twitchy at the moment. I have had 2 separate transactions bounced in 2 days as they are 'unusual'. One for my Ski holiday and one for house insurance. Hmmmmm I renew the insurance every year and have several holidays still better to be extra vigilant.
They even phoned me yesterday to confirm I had paid some money off my card. If anyone wants to pay money onto my card I am really happy for them to do it.

What do you do when a credit card company phones you up to 'check a transaction'. Invariably, they ask for me by name. Then they want to complete a security check.

Am I being paranoind by refusing to give them any security details when they have phoned me? They always seem surprised I am not prepared to divulge anything when they have called me!

Get the person's name and ring them back on a number that you have for them, ie the call centre. Then ask to be transferred to this person.
