I stand (or more correctly, sit) corrected. At least I got Churchill right

Being clear

There a huge differnce between the written word and writing intended for speech.

"A man was shot in Manchester today."

"A man was shot in the Gorbals today."

"A man was seriously wounded in the East End of London this afternoon."

All are perfectly correct for a TV or Radio bulletin.

What would be better as a tabloid newspaper lead would be.

"A Manchester man was shot today ....

unless reported locally then ..

"A man from Trafford was shot this afternoon...

Moving on ...

Or a Daily Mail lead would be ...

Manchester rocked to the sound of gunfire today as a local man was unmercifully targetted by a Labour-voting, vegetarian, homosexual ...

Daily Telegraph lead would be ...

There was an incident in the North earlier and I was awoken from my slumber at the club ...

Guardian lead would be ...

Come on make yer own up !!

What if it was actually (say) a scouser who'd come to manchester to steal things? In that case, would the original not be more appropriate?

(yes, I'm bored, stuck in the house by myself and the wine's run out...)
