| Learner driver Ok, my other half is out tonight but i want to go for a drive. I am going to try and con my mum into coming out with me. However, she has some penalty points on her licence from alledgedly going through a red light (its not true - someone was pratting about halfway through and delayed them all - there was a copper sat on the other side writing number plates down of everyone who came through when the lights were green on that side). Can my mum come out with me?

| My son recently bought a car and is on L plates, to get an insurance quote we had to have a qualified driver on his insurance at least as a named driver. I assume from this that the 'instructor' must be insured on the car too. In the end it was more economic to get the insurance in my name with my wife and son as named drivers. Also for insurance purposes it is cheaper if the learner have access and is insured on a second car (Admiral at least) but it cannot be the Instructors car that you are taking lessons on/in. | The definitive answer! Your Mum must have held a full licence for at least two years and YOU need to be insured to drive the car. That's all (unless your Mum ends up driving the car herself, in which case she needs insurance as well). The points on her licence don't matter. (For peace of mind though, I'd get her to check her life insurance is paid up to date! And aren't those cops bastards! All of 'em!
