Question What is happening to our Language?

As heard on R2 this morning + some of my own views :-

Not only are "they" adding stupid words like "bling" and others from the hip hop genre of music/culture(?), BUT, they are now also removing good old English words from the dictionary such as "gullible" - if you don't believe me, look in your latest dictionary!

I blame all those people who use mathematical symbols instead of the correct words in a sentance!

In france they do not let new words in english enter the language. For instance "Walkman" will be translated into french, even though it is a product and a trade name.

Unfortunatley the english language is ever changing. Words will fall into disuse, and will therefore be taken out of the dictionary. That is why "legalese" uses archaic language - it is no longer used and therefore its meaning cannot change.

Usually I am one of the old f@rt brigade, but this for me is why our language is so strong - it is ever-changing and accommodates new words. It is a real strength and keeps it alive.

It also gives folk something to moan about aprt from the weather and as we know, people do like a good moan

Regards

Simon

Thus why in france they had to change the name of Toyota's MR2 to MRJ.

MR2 in french was 'em. er. deux'. which sounds like 'merde' meaning shit.

Toyota Shit. Well, at least the french have the explanation!

Mark.

Titter me not!

Bollocks - I can't stop tittering about this one. Someone allegedly phoned in to Stuart Marconi(sp?) to tell him the word "gullible" was still in his dictionary! Surely that must be a wind up?

Spelling mistakes abound in the above replies. Tut tut, tsk tsk, for shame.

Is it possible to have a "spell checker" on the forum? This would serve a dual function (should that be "the dual function"?) of checking our spelling and would ensure that Harry Potter "wannabees" don't "splinch" themselves or something similarly silly and unpleasant.
