Spools - educate me !!

I have been having a look at those dinky halcyon spools. Now they are a lot smaller in size than my reel (for stowing etc).

Question is, how do you use them - I know it sounds daft, but I was told that you used your fingers for controlling (braking or reeling in) but what about that 3 inch double ended bulldog clip that is used for a variety of things which seem complicated.

How do you use the spool/clip set up ???

Most of my diving will be 35m max so what size spool - is a 45m of line on OK or is this not enough in case of currents etc

Thanks - my education continues............MOVED TO DIR FORUM

fingers make the axle for it to rotate on when deploying it (apparently the plastic one you can just cradle and they'll spin? mine stainless so it don't )

to wind up you just wind the line back on with your fingers you can use a bolt snap but its not nesecary

Woz may be able to get you a cheap spool £20 ish I think they were

Spools Are Great

Should have posted this on the DIR Forum ,I use them and they are great .I use suit inflator to inflate bag ..excellent no fannying about takes seconds.

I have people in my club saying oh its too small ...blah blah....CRAP

Its a skill that takes just a little practise.

A little tip When getting to TOWARDS 6M Build the line on one side of spool and use the other side to clip in double ender ,the holes will not have as much line build up therefore easier to clip in.....or remove a few metres of line.

I used to use a big open ended bag and use the long hose to inflate the bag .But I use the halcyon closed circuit bag ...(small) suit inflator or oral inflation ...much easier

can use your finger to reel line on spool then when no more slack..clip double ender on line, wind in so there is a little tension ..then clip off to the spool.

Have buoyancy right as you don't want to pull bag under surface!!! hanging off it !!

I have the spool and bag already attached in pocket to to aid deploying and stop any dicking about especially if tides running.

The only down side is in winter after a long dive the fingers are frozen its alittle harder to use .....

I'm trying dry gloves this winter to try and solve that problem

Andy

Hated dry gloves. Get 3-finger mitts, they're wonderful!

I've got a Halcyon CC SMB on my Xmas list, wonder if I'll get it

All good advice Andy mate.

BTW to creat a signature (ditties) at the bottom of your post just go into your profile and edit it in there.
