If you use your octopus to fill the blob beware to just purge it gently in small amounts, or it's likely to freeflow at this time of year... Using exhaust air from your DV or wing would be safer, but needs a bit more care to avoid entanglement...

Best

true, plus with the octopus mouthpiece in the dsmb opening, a sudden rush of lots of gas can create a vortex - which then clamps the octopus to the inside of the bag and sometimes leads to a freeflow. It's much better to use the exhaust from the octopus, rather than the mouthpiece , with small short bursts.

Andy,

I know what you mean - reeling in 40 mtrs of line when one revolution of the spool recovers 0.00002 mm of line.

Because I'm such a woosy I like the blob on the surface whilst I'm still on the wreck.

I use the same technique. Often have to use a mid-water release when we are diving in sheltered gullies with the tide roaring along above. If you let it go when you are on the bottom, it just gets tangled up.

Get a bigger spool, three revs and 20m later you're on the surface, no problem.

Matt

Just another tip

If you are new to the mid-water deploy start by just hovering off the bottom - drift dives are great for this. You can progress to sending hovering next to a wreck and after that use your buddy as visual reference.

Can any think of another skill you build progressively by starting in deep water and working gradually shallower!

Deplying Blobs

I was taught to deploy my blob/smb what ever your pet name is for them by exhaling with the exhaust valve of my cyclon reg just in the bag which doesn't effect your bouyancy to much, but this does take plenty of practice but i'm sure there are others who can explain this method better than me. I practice at Wraysbury or in the shallows in Portalnd etc.. good stuff to practice over the winter

Jayne
