Taking nothing away from Woz's straps, which will make you weep with joy, Here's a cheaper alternative which work brilliantly...

Noel,

I've had those pins pull out with normal flat straps. I suspect that with the force in the middle they may be more likely to bend and come out. I'm happy to be wrong on this point.

I assume this type of fin have been done before, but can the bungee be fastened around the lugs off the fin itself? Anyone?

Adrian

Thumbs up

Very Good!

Similar to mine, except that I used two completely separate bungees per fin, and threaded them through some cheap clear pipe from the DIY store - this adds about 50p to te cost, but means that they go over the heel easier!

Cheers, Paul

Adrian, I was initially worried about that as well but a hell of a lot of force has been applied and they seem to be still holding. The bungee can be put around the mushroos as well but the mushrooms have to be modified slightly.

Hang on.... Mushroom, mushrooom. Badger badger etc...

[added] Paul, Thanks. I thought about the clear tubing but I've not had a problem so far and what with being a redundant cheapskate...

Yes Adrian, that has been done before...... there used to be a whole host of info on here many moons ago showing as many different configurations of bungeed fins as there are people posting! Probably lost in the great crash??
I'll see if I have a copy anywhere, but I think I may have deleted it

Cheers, Paul

SNAKE!

Glad to hear things are holding up Noel. I have yet to do this to one set of fins with those fittings. It was a reason I have not.

You need a couple of shackles to go round the mushroomy thing and ideally a tube to go over the bungee and really ideally a spring to go down the middle too.

But I would definitely look at the shackles and tubing as an 'upgrade' to your bungee straps. 5mm bow shackles fit a treat. You know where to get them from...

Just replace...

Just remove the standard Mares quick release and stick a normal el cheapo buckle on (Just the female part), no pins to pull out.

Like this (Half way down the page)

http://diveweb.oneandoneis2.org/guide/general.htm

These are now relegated to pool fins but still going strong 2 years after I first put the bungee on.

Mine are the same as Foggy's. Two bungees are safer IMHO - if one snaps, you have redundancy.

Having said that - mine are starting to get a bit tatty so I've just ordered some Woz Straps. Will report on how they compare to bungee...
