inverters/converters?

I didn't know where to put this, so it's here.

I'm looking to run a 3 phase motor from my garage but have only a single phase supply. So I'm probably looking for an inverter (am I?).
Did think about changing the motor to single, but I would need a really big one.
Any other suggestions or advise on where to get a cheap inverter from?

Converter

Hi, A Friend Of Mine Bought One (don't Know How Much), It Was Far Cheaper To Buy A Converter Than To Change The Motor, Try Ebay

Call Lenze. They do single to 4 phase inverters.

it depends how big ya motor is col last i remember about 4/5hp was ya lot in single phase as 3 phase motors are then used cos there more efficient.

It's to run an old compressor (not original). The 3phase is 7.5hp.
Did some working out and I think a 3-4kw single motor would do the job. If it comes to it a petrol motor might be the way to go. Can lay my hands on a 10hp mower motor if it comes to that, but would prefer it to be electric for noise.

yep col that sounds to big for a single phase motor from what i can remember.
it has a lot to do with the starting torque as well which is were 3 phase wins hands down,,a cold compressor needs a fair ol bit of poke on its initial start up. far easier of course when its warm and well lubed up.
if ya want an easy hit to get it going then a petrol or diesel 10 hp would do the trick just make sure the gearing and run speed are right,no point flogging the arse out of it.
a nice long flexi hose air intake will be high on the list of must have's for ming free fills.
all the best
