transporting cylinders

Just been looking at these (http://www.divepac.co.uk/) after driving home last night with my cylinders rolling around in the back of the car despite trying to wedge them with weights etc.

Seems a bit expensive - I wonder if any of you lot have a cheaper/better solution?

My method tends to be to put the cylinder in the back seat passenger footwell, it doesn't roll around, and the neck of the cylinder is protected. (This was in a very small car, so there wasn't room for it to move around!)

you could get a suitably sized plank and lash the cylinder(s) to it with a couple of bungees. that would stop them rolling.

personally I just wedge them with weights etc.

If more than one, I 69 them and bungy them () if single wedge it against the back seat in the boot area.
You really don't want a cylinder rattling around the passenger space in a car in an accident.

Sheet of ply with semi circle bits cut out for cylinders and a bit of two by two between them.

I know this makes NO sense in words, but if you REALLY want to know, I could probably come up with a picture.

dead cheap, just like me

Ingredeents
one piece of 25mm plywood slightly wider than the radius of your cylinder by the diamiter of your cylinder plus twice the width of your rails second piece of 25mm ply half the width by the same length as the above. Two rails of 2x2 or simalar about 150mm shorter than your cyliner lenght.

Method
take larger piece of ply and stand up on lonver edge. In the top edge cut a semi-circular notch in the centre with a radius matching the radius of the NECK of your cylinder.
take smaller piece of ply and stand it on oit's longest edge. Cut a suitable resess in the centre of the top edge with a radius to match the radius of your cylinder. This WONT be a semicircle.
Now take the 2x2 and form a frame with the 2x2 as rials parallel to the cyliners and the plywood pieces ate each end of the rails positioned to suport the cylinder. Use nails, brakets or blocks to connect theh end panells and the rails to form a firm frame. Fasten the frame to your car boot with nails, bolts, tie downs or weights depending on your particular circumstances.

The frame can be made to accomodate two or three cylinders by exending the end plates by the diamiter of your cyilinders plus a bi for spacing. Bigger frames will need cross bracing or mounting on a solid plate for a base.

Lightbulb mucho cheapo version

Being a natural born skinflint I use three lengths of 2" plastic waste pipe the same length as my tanks held together with a couple of bits of poly rope, drill holes through the pipe a few inches in from each end and knot the rope either side of the pipe (imagine the pipes are three rungs of a wide ladder and the ropes are the sides) adjust the spacing to just keep your tins off the floor.
Hey presto, no more rolling cylinders - at least if you're not too enthusiastic on the corners anyway.

Works for me,
Steve

I use these for transporting singles when it's not practical to leave them on the wings: http://www.simplyscuba.com/ProductDe...?StockID=72811

If I was even vaguely competent at DIY stuff I would try to make something similar but I'm not. Leave that sort of thing to the likes of Woz. Less strain on the A&E depts that way...
